Creating a Repository

Overview

Repositories are the core of gityar. They contain all your project files, commit history, and collaboration tools.

Steps to Create a Repository

1. Navigate to Create Page

Click the "+" icon in the header and select "New Repository", or visit /repo/create.

2. Fill in Repository Details

• Owner: Choose your account or an organization you belong to
• Repository Name: A unique name (alphanumeric, hyphens, underscores)
• Description (optional): Brief description of your project
• Visibility:
  • Public: Anyone can view the repository
  • Private: Only you and collaborators can access

3. Initialize Repository (Optional)

You can initialize your repository with:

• README: A markdown file describing your project
• .gitignore: Predefined ignore patterns for your language/framework
• License: Open source license (MIT, GPL, Apache, etc.)

4. Create

Click "Create Repository" and you're done!

Next Steps

After creating your repository:

1. Clone it locally:

   git clone <repository-url>
   cd <repository-name>
   

2. Add your files:

   git add .
   git commit -m "Initial commit"
   git push origin main
   

3. Invite collaborators: Go to Settings → Collaboration → Add Collaborators

4. Set up webhooks: Automate workflows with webhooks

Repository Settings

You can configure many aspects of your repository:

• Description and Website: Update project info
• Avatar: Custom repository icon
• Branches: Default branch, branch protection
• Collaboration: Add collaborators, manage teams
• Webhooks: Configure automation
• Git Hooks: Server-side Git hooks
• Danger Zone: Transfer ownership, delete repository

Tips

• Use descriptive repository names
• Always include a README file
• Choose an appropriate license
• Add a .gitignore file for your tech stack
• Keep your repository organized with clear folder structure
